news.

"Cетевые люди", как все замкнутые сообщества, используют
при переписке жаргонизмы и специальные словечки. Новичку
из Советского Союза довольно трудно сообразить, что они
означают, учитывая их англо-саксонское происхождение,
и то, что отнюдь не все читали книжку "Как эффективно
использовать Usenet", где кое-что подобное описано.

Здесь помещены некоторые "последовательности символов",
значения которых полезно знать, читая телеконференции
и приходящую из-за границы почту.


BTW -- ("By The Way") - "Кстати, между прочим"

FAQ -- ("Frequently Asked Question") - "Часто задаваемый
вопрос"
FAQL -- ("Frequently Asked Questions List") -
Список чересчур часто задаваемых в данной группе
вопросов с ответами на них. Обычно составляется
каким-либо добровольцем, который устал их читать,
Обычно этот список появляется в группе регулярно.

IMHO -- ("In My Humble Opinion" или "In My Honest Opinion")
- "По моему скромному мнению" или "По моему мнению,
честно говоря" - Достаточно часто встречается при
обмене мнениями в дискуссии. Сигнализирует об
"интеллигентном" общении, т.е. без ругани.

Ob. -- "Obligatory" - ("Обязательная часть") - обычно
используется, когда соответствующая часть письма,
во-первых, стоит в конце сообщения, и, во-вторых,
единственное место в письме, которое имеет какое-то
отношение к соответствующей группе.

[sic] -- "Нет, предшествующее слово\предложение не опечатка,
и не глупая ошибка (или она сделана преднамеренно) -
это именно то, что я хотел сказать". Чаще всего
используется при воспроизведении чужой ошибки или
оговорки.

.sig -- подпись пользователя, которая добавляется в конце
к статье или письму, или файл, в котором хранится ее
содержание.

:-) -- ("Smiley") - "Улыбочка" - Используется, чтобы показать
что текст перед ней надо воспринимать с юмором.
Существует большое число вариантов - :^) ;-> 8=)
и т.д., причем "8" в 8-) означаетe очки, иногда это
же изображение перевернуто (-: - в этом случае оно
означает ... то же самое.
(Если вы вдруг не поняли, почему используется этот
символ, мысленно поверните его на 90 градусов).
Иногда также встречаются :-| and :-( ; первое означает:
или "Я здесь абсолютно серьезен" или "У меня противоречивые
чувства по этому поводу"; второе означаеет "Это меня
злит или расстраивает".

THX -- ("Thanks") - "Cпасибо".


МДГ -- Между нами девочками говоря, применяется с целью придания
сообщению интимного характера



ASAP -- As Soon As Possible (e.g. Please call me ASAP)

*...* -- Kisses, nomber of astericks corresponds to nomber of kisses

U -- you (e.g. Could U please etc)

R -- are (e.g. U R wrong)

C -- see (e.g. C U later)

S -- ass!

X -- ex (former), very often used in 'xUSSR'

Y -- why (e.g. Y did U?)

Emoticons and Acronyms
In an electronic medium such as the forum, it's pretty hard to
get across certain elements of face to face communications
that would otherwise be expressed with tone of voice,
inflection or body language -- elements like humor, irony,
sadness and various non-verbal "comments" on what is being
discussed. Consequently, certain conventions have arisen to
express this kind of thing.

Technically, an emoticon is an "icon designating emotions"
depicted with symbols. Perhaps the most common of which is:

:-) a smiling face on its side (tilt your head to the left
to read it).

There are literally hundreds of others. However, the term can
also be applied to text-based equivalents that are more
commonly used on this forum.

<g>
grin -- either the previous comment was meant
humorously or one is responding with a laugh to
somebody else's humorous comment -- perhaps the most
widely used symbol on this forum.

<s>
smile -- usually means that one is smiling at someone
else's comment or could refer to one's own comment
that is slightly humorous.

<gd&r>
grin, ducking and running -- the previous comment was
a "tease" and the person issuing the tease is now
hiding out from his or her target. Some variations of
this are a simple <gd> (grin and ducking) or <gd&r
vvf> (grinning, ducking and running, very very fast).

<rofl> or <rof,l>
rolling on the floor laughing -- the ultimate
acknowledgement of somebody else's humor or an
indication that you think you just said something
yourself that is pretty ridiculous.

"*" or "_"
As in *emphasize* or _emphasize_ -- equivalent to
italics or underlining.

Creative and naughty people on the forum will sometimes make
up their own emoticons from time to time but they almost
always explain them since nobody would otherwise know what
they're talking about.

Acronyms
Many acronyms have also become standard -- mainly to save
typing. Some of the common ones are explained here. Any
others you encounter, you'll have to figure out for yourself,
but once you've got the "trick" down, it's kind of fun.

joking statement since we can't hear voice inflection over Unix.

;-) Winky smilie. User just made a flirtatious and/or sarcastic remark.
More of a "don't hit me for what I just said" smilie.

:-( Frowning smilie. User did not like that last statement or is upset
or depressed about something.

:-I Indifferent smilie. Better than a Frowning smilie but not quite as
good as a happy smilie

:-> User just made a really biting sarcastic remark. Worse than a :-).
